Problem.

Surface lunar habitation must contend with thermal swings of +130 °C to –170 °C across the 29.5-day cycle, micrometeorite exposure, radiation, and the slow physiological deconditioning of partial gravity. Every surface architecture pays for these problems continuously, with active heating, shielding, repair, and exercise prescriptions that compound across decades.

Approach.

Go deep enough and build well enough that the Moon itself becomes the habitat. The enabling technology is the dual-pulse plasma laser drill from Asteroid Mining, adapted for precision sub-surface excavation — zero mechanical wear, arbitrary cross-section, native vacuum operation, real-time geological sensing.

"At 100 m depth, pressure containment becomes a sealing problem rather than a structural one."

Why 100 m.

  • No groundwater — eliminates the primary hazard of Earth underground construction.
  • No thermal cycling — rock has been stable for billions of years.
  • No significant seismic activity — the Moon is geologically quiet.
  • Compressive confining stress carries structural loads naturally.
  • Equipment waste heat plus human metabolic heat maintain shirt-sleeve conditions without dominant active heating.

Three independent surface routes.

Personnel walking tunnel, vehicle logistics ramp, internal monorail. Each incorporates multi-bend blast geometry and emergency refuges at every lock chamber. Independence is the safety principle: no single failure can isolate the colony.

Inter-settlement vacuum maglev.

Three speed tiers. The deepest express tunnels follow great-circle routes where the Moon's own radius exceeds the curve radius required for 23,000 km/h comfort. Vanguard cars physically sweep the cross-section ahead of every train; rotating couches allow 2g emergency braking in a reclined rearward-facing position.

The 1g sleep facility.

A circular maglev sleep facility with 1-kilometer minimum radius provides 8 hours of 1g centripetal loading nightly at 357 km/h cruise — 0.95 RPM, below the 1 RPM comfort threshold for rotating habitats. Standing weight-bearing pods supplement for skeletal and cardiovascular conditioning. The same infrastructure prevents generational physiological divergence from Earth-baseline humanity, serves as emergency response network, g-tolerance training, and community space.

Excavation = extraction.

Every cubic meter excavated feeds TFOPS. Excavation and resource extraction are the same operation. A 500 kg laser drill system, landed in a single mission, is the foundation from which everything else follows.
