Problem.

Current android programs optimize for manufacturing cost (Tesla Optimus) or research flexibility (Boston Dynamics Atlas), but rarely for long-term field maintainability. The complexity is pushed into hardware that is expensive to iterate, and the safety logic depends on software state that is expensive to verify.

Approach.

Begin from a different premise: design for predictable service life, graceful degradation, and field-replaceable components. Push complexity into software where it is cheapest to iterate. Keep the hardware substrate deliberately simple and modular.

Architectural principles.

  • Layered Muscle Ensembles. Multiple artificial muscle fiber bundles per joint, arranged at varying angles and force ratios in antagonistic and synergistic groups. No single actuator is versatile; versatility emerges from ensemble coordination. Compliance, variable stiffness, graceful degradation, and bundle-only power consumption.
  • Three-Tier Federated Power. Central torso battery (primary); distributed bone-cell storage (local buffering for transients); trunk bus with explicit AI-commanded power levels. No implicit power draw — every consumption is deliberate and auditable.
  • Hardware-First Safety. Safety logic operates independently of software state. Physical interrupt lines mirror biological reflex arcs; force sensors directly trigger muscle release without traversing the software stack.
  • Replaceable Component Libraries. Field-replaceable joints, bundles, sensors, and skin panels. Engineered for predictable service life rather than self-repair complexity.
